* prevalence of temporal arteritis with a normal erythrocyte sedimentation rate is unknown but estimated to be 2 to 8.7 percent of all cases of temporal arteritis (2).
* ultrasound scan of the temporal arteries (and, by protocol, axillary arteries) should ideally be done within one week of starting steroids, and biopsies ideally within two weeks, and UK recommendations suggest within six weeks (3).
